Witnessing a child endure discomfort from colds or coughs can be deeply distressing for any parent. Since birth, baby becomes so sensitive to bacterial infections like cold and cough and it becomes nightmare for the new moms experiencing this for her newborn.
However, it is recommended to not use any home remedies if your child is under 1 year as they are very sensitive or maybe allergic to some ingredients. It is safe to consult your pediatrician for the same.
As a mother myself, I've explored numerous home remedies to alleviate my children's suffering, and I'd like to share some that have personally proven effective:
Here are some home remedies for cold and cough
Mustard Oil and Garlic Massage:
Warm mustard oil infused with ajwain and peeled garlic makes for a soothing massage blend. Gently rub this mixture onto the baby's chest, navel area, and feet twice a day for relief.
Onion in Socks:
Surprisingly effective, placing slices of onion in your child's socks while they sleep can help alleviate cough and cold symptoms. Additionally, keeping onion pieces in their room can aid in easing congestion.
Nasal Spray:
A saline spray is invaluable for relieving nasal congestion in toddlers. It provides instant relief, helping to clear their nostrils and ease discomfort.
- Turmeric Milk:
- Known for its antibiotic properties, turmeric can be added to warm milk to help loosen mucus. This concoction not only provides comfort but also aids in fighting off infections.
Ginger and Honey:
- For children over two years old, a mixture of ginger and honey works wonders. Ginger's anti-inflammatory properties soothe the throat, while honey adds sweetness and further relief.
Ginger Water:
- Boil ginger slices in water until it reduces by half, then cool and offer it to your child to drink. This concoction helps alleviate cold and cough symptoms effectively.
Black pepper is quite popular in dealing with cold and cough. However, kids older than 2 years can be given this remedy. Crush pepper into a fine powder and mix it with honey. 1 teaspoon of this remedy can give relief to your child.
Blow Through Nose:
Teaching children over the age of two to blow their nose can help clear mucus, providing relief from nasal congestion. Parents can play a game of blowing nose as it is not easy to get them do this.
Increase Fluid Intake:
Encourage your child to stay hydrated throughout the day, preferably with warm water to avoid aggravating symptoms. Steer clear of cold beverages like orange juice, which can exacerbate congestion.
Elevate Their Heads:
Elevating your child's head with extra pillows while they sleep can alleviate discomfort and ensure a more restful night.
Disclaimer-Please remember, these remedies are based on personal experience. If symptoms persist for more than two days or worsen, it's essential to seek medical advice promptly.
